Narcissistic Personality Disorder

Causes:
Biological View:
  • The onset of the disorder can occur before or during adolescence and can be attributed to childhood abuse or trauma inflicted by parents, authority figures or peers. It can also be caused by unpredictable or unreliable caregiving from parents, for being praised for perceived exceptional looks or talents by adults and from learning manipulative behaviors from their parents.
Socio-Cultural View:
  • It can be a result of negative childhood experiences with other people.
Cognitive View:
  • Some think it is caused by a bad connection between the brain, behavior and thinking.
Symptoms:
  • They react to criticism with feelings of rage, shame or humiliation
  • They take advantage of others in order to achieve their own goals
  • They have a great sense of self- importance
  • Believe their problems are unique and can only be understood by other special people
  • They have a preoccupation with fantasies of unlimited success, power, beauty, intelligence or ideal love
  • They have unreasonable expectations
  • They are unable to recognize and experience how other people feel
  • Preoccupied with feelings of envy and are easily jealous
  • They need to be the center of attention or admiration in a work or social situation
Treatment:
Biological View:
  • Family therapy brings the whole family together so they can explore conflicts, communication and problem solving in able to help the person cope with relationship problems.
Socio-Cultural View:
  • Group therapy has the person meet with a group of other people with similiar conditions. It's helpful in teaching them to relate to other people. It also makes them listen to others, learn about their own feelings and offer support to others.
Cognitive View:
  • Cognitive behavioral therapy helps identify unhealthy, negative beliefs and behaviors and replaces them with healthy and positive ones.
