Fatal Attraction: Is an example of someone with Borderline Personality Disorder
Scene One: In this scene Alex Forest is having a meal with Dan Gallagher who is married. She had met him at a party and they were at the same meeting the next day. They were caught in the rain and couldn't find a taxi so they decided that they would go have lunch. Alex smokes cigarettes and after a brief talk decides to have sex with Dan. This is an example of Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) because she was impulsive. Both smoking cigarettes and sex are self damaging.
Scene Two: In this scene Dan and Alex have just had sex and he tells her that he needs to leave because he has things to do before his family comes back. She becomes extremely angry at him, tells him to get out and that she hates him. This is a symptom of BPD because she shows intense anger and has problems controlling it.
Scene Three: When Dan tries to leave Alex's apartment she tells him that she is sorry she got mad at him and starts kissing him. He notices blood and realizes that she slit both her wrists. He takes her to the sink and runs into her bedroom grabbing a cloth and tearing it so that he can wrap her bleeding wrists up. Instead of leaving like he planned he stays the night because he is worried that she will try to kill herself again. This is a symptom of BPD because she slit her wrists to make him stay with her.
Scene Four: In this scene Alex insists on seeing Dan after he won't return her phone calls. He agrees to met her and while they are walking into the subway she tells him that she loves him and is pregnant. She tells him that she thought he would want to be with her now because she is pregnant with his child. This is an example of BPD because she has unstable and intense relationships. She had only met Dan a few times and insists that she is in love with him.
Analysis:
The movie Fatal Attraction did a good job in representing Borderline Personality Disorder. One of the main characters, Alex Forrest, has the symptoms of BPD. She is impulsive, self damaging, has intense anger and problems controlling it. She has unstable relationships and goes from loving the other person to hating them quickly. BPD is a serious disorder and should be treated with therapy.
In the movie they show the symptoms very well. During one of the scenes Alex goes from telling Dan she loves him to telling him that she hates him and wants him to leave. This is a symptom of BPD because it shows the unstable relationship she has with Dan. Another one of Alex's symptoms was self mutilation. To make sure Dan wouldn't leave her one night, she slit her wrists. I believe that the movie represents BPD accurately because it shows many of the symptoms of the disorder and what can happen if you don't get help. Fatal Attraction was a very good movie.
